While the Second Wave played a crucial role in broadening the scope of the feminist cause, it had its share of flaws and failures. Like first-wave feminism, the second wave mostly catered to the needs of middle-class white women who built the movement primarily around their concerns. This created a conflicting relationship with women of other classes and races. We have to keep in mind that the second wave of feminism emerged in the backdrop of the civil rights movement, and it did not address the issues faced by women belonging to marginalized communities. In the eyes of many African Americans, white women were as much the oppressor as white men. Some believed it was unreasonable for middle-class white women to demand jobs when vast numbers of male African-Americans were living below the poverty line.
It is these issues of racial discrimination within the Second Wave that gave rise to the concept of 'Intersectional Feminism'.
In my next post, I will be discussing the elusive concept of 'Intersectional feminism'. Stay tuned!
