England won the first-ever Women's Finalissima 4-2 in a penalty shootout at a crowded Wembley Stadium on Thursday, with Euro 2022 star Chloe Kelly converting the winning spot-kick following a 1-1 tie.
Sarina Wiegman's European champions were on track for a narrow victory after gaining the lead in a dominant first half with a well-worked team goal completed off by Ella Toone.
Brazil, though, was changed after the break and threatened to spoil the celebration when Andressa Alves scored from close range in the 93rd minute.
The game proceeded directly to penalties because there was no additional time.
Georgia Stanway, Rachel Daly, and Alex Greenwood all scored from the penalty spot to put England up 3-1.
Kerolin kept the game alive, but Kelly, who scored the game-winning goal in last year's European Championship final at Wembley, tapped home calmly to clinch the victory.
Wiegman stated that her squad has not had much opportunity to practice penalties while training for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, which begins in July.
“We practiced yesterday and before the Euros, we practiced a lot,” she said. “We just repeated it yesterday in case. We knew what to do and we did good.”
The Dutch coach, who has yet to taste loss as England's manager, said she felt "privileged" to have gone 30 games unbeaten.
"I'm very happy working here," she declared. "Such an incredible group. The team is so committed, they want to learn every day."
