After watching The Idea of You, you may be wondering if the film adhered to the shocking conclusion of the novel. With the final release of The Idea of You on Prime Video, starring Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, fans are enamoured with the fast-paced romance between Hayes and Solène. The ages of the two main characters—Solène, who is 39 and Hayes, who is 20 in the book, and the characters, who are 40 and 24, in the film—as well as a few other significant aspects that transpire during their relationship are among the many significant variations between the film and Robinne Lee's original novel.
The most significant distinction of all, though, may be the conclusion. Michael Showalter, the director, has finally clarified why it was necessary to alter the plot and depart from the conclusion of the first novel.
What is the conclusion of The Idea of You? Do Hayes and Solène become a couple?Nope, Hayes and Solène do not wind up together in the novel. And when the novel was originally published, many were devastated by their romance's untimely conclusion. Like in the movie, Solène ends her relationship with Hayes at the end of the book.
She tells him she no longer loves him while lying as well. In the book, Hayes tells Solène that he still loves her, that he misses her, and that he thinks of her numerous times a day following their breakup. She doesn't reply to any of them after months of this.
As a romantic comedy and romance movie lover, director Michael Showalter explained to RadioTimes.com why the movie has an entirely different ending from the book: "I think, for me, it was more just as the filmmaker, and as a fan of romantic movies, this felt like the kind of movie where we wanted to give the audience a hopeful ending." "Therefore, we definitely could have concluded the film in a different manner," he continued. However, we thought that a happier resolution for this tale would delight our readers the most. And in the end, when creating a film such as this, the audience is the most important factor."
And that's it!
