Today the World Population has officially reached 8 billion people, according to World Population Prospects 2022, released today on World Population Day by the United Nations.
According to the reports, “India is projected to surpass China as the world’s most populous country in 2023.”
Presenting the report, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said,” This year’s World Population Day falls during a milestone year, when we anticipate the birth of the Earth’s eight billionth inhabitant. This is an occasion to celebrate our diversity, recognize our common humanity, and marvel at advancements in health that have extended lifespans and dramatically reduced maternal and child mortality rates,”
“At the same time, it is a reminder of our shared responsibility to care for our planet and a moment to reflect on where we still fall short of our commitments to one another,” he added.
Though the report suggests that the global population could grow up to 8.5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050, well let’s say that 0.5 billion population will be added from India only.
In the 1970s and 80s, the Chinese government started the One Child Policy to control the population of China. The policy was part of a much bigger initiative and programme that ended in 2021 that included minimum ages at marriage and childbearing, two-child limits for many couples, minimum time intervals between births, heavy surveillance, and stiff fines for non-compliance.
Since many years, India has had an ever-growing population, there have been many predictions in the past too which said that India will take over China and become the highest populated country in the world.
Maybe something to look forward to celebrating as Indians among the rising poverty and inflation in the country!
Let’s see, will the Indian government take any initiative to control the growing population in the country amidst the lack of resources and opportunities, or let the population grow even further.
Only time will tell, or maybe the population!
