Every year on February 2, people worldwide celebrate World Wetlands Day. On this day in 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar, on the beaches of the Caspian Sea, the Convention on Wetlands was adopted.
Wetlands are disappearing three times more quickly than forests, and since the 1700s, about 90% of the world's wetlands have been damaged. But wetlands are essential ecosystems that support biodiversity, climate mitigation and adaptation, freshwater availability, global economies, and more.
The subject for 2023, Wetland Restoration, emphasises the critical importance of giving wetland restoration first priority.
The perfect moment to raise awareness of these vitally important ecosystems is on World Wetlands Day!!
