It's a beautiful book. Among many levels that, the book reveal itself, I like the narrative part where the hapless realise opium can make people forget the damage opium has done!!
Adding this book to my reading list!
A must read! A part that really stuck out to me was when the character Deeti ponders on how if individuals can be steered so easily with a few shavings of opium, higher quantities would be enough to control entire empires. And she’s absolutely right! Exactly what the British were doing in China. Also appreciated how Colonial and Mercantile hypocrisy was on full display.
Ending the year off reading part one of the historical fiction trilogy by Amitav Ghosh “The Sea of Poppies.” The book follows the lives of some very different individuals from the Indian subcontinent as they journey to the Mauritius Islands (or Mareech as it was then known in India) as indentured servants, before the onset of the first Opium wars between England and China. The best part about this book is the peak it gives you into lives that are otherwise lost in history. For example, I never even knew the vast and sweeping effects of Opium production and trading on the northern provinces of India.
