I believe that art transcends language, race, gender, and any socially constructed barrier whatsoever. You can ask anyone who has been struck by art, it stirs something in you, and it changes you.
However, it hasn’t been easy to form my own company here. It has been a struggle for sure. The government doesn’t provide artists enough funds, restricting us in different ways. People are less reliable and less square here. In France, we had a proper Government committee for art and artists specifically to cater to our needs, but there is nothing of that sort in India. Moreover, it seems like art is something that the elite or the higher class enjoys here. The rural areas have always been kept in the dark. It is quite a strenuous fight, but as they say, what comes out of struggles, blood and sweat are always beautiful. So I can see a flicker of hope at the end of the tunnel.
I still get nervous every time I perform. Sometimes I ask myself, “why did I set myself up for this?”. But performing and art make you more self-aware. You discover things about yourself that you never knew existed. Even though there is a certain amount of risk factors involved, for me, it has always been about pushing the boundaries and creating something valuable, beautiful, and transformative.
